DISTRICT ENERGY

Green energy helped shape the development of the property with the implementation of a sophisticated district energy plant that shares power amongst buildings and utilizes renewable energy sources.

Developed by Onni’s in house enterprise, District Energy, the central plant functions below the Seattle development, producing heating, cooling, and domestic hot water that is distributed, reheated and recirculated to each tower.

WHAT IS DISTRICT ENERGY?

The buildings’ district energy systems produce heating, cooling, and hot water within a central plant and then distribute the energy through underground pipes to buildings connected to the system. Once the hot water is put through a heat exchanger at each building, the water is returned to the central plant to be reheated and then recirculated through the closed-loop piping system. Individual buildings do not need boilers and customers use hot water to meet their space heating needs. By sharing and centralizing the energy that homes and businesses need, buildings use significantly less energy than if each building had their own equipment. For example, offices have a higher cooling requirement and the waste heat from office space can be used to pre-heat domestic hot water, thereby reducing the requirement for electricity and fossil fuels to heat the water. Renewable Energy Sources

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR LEVEL SEATTLE – SOUTH LAKE UNION GUESTS?

Energy is delivered and ready to use at the site, eliminating the costs of operating and maintain individual equipment. Further, district energy systems can substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions by being powered by many types of energy sources, which means that they are able to take advantage of new energy technologies as they emerge.
